Dental Veneers

Some dental problems can’t be fixed with whitening or bonding alone. Deep stains that don’t respond to bleaching, teeth that are slightly crooked or misshapen, or multiple cosmetic issues happening at once often need a more comprehensive solution. At Belgrade Family Dental, Dr. Jennifer Lehnhardt and our team use dental veneers to completely transform how teeth look while keeping the actual procedure minimally invasive.

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that cover the front surface of your teeth. They address multiple concerns at once and can last for well over a decade with proper care.

What Veneers Can Fix

Veneers work for a range of cosmetic concerns, particularly when someone wants to change several things about their smile rather than just one isolated issue.

Veneers effectively correct:

  • Teeth stained by medications or root canal treatment that don’t respond to whitening
  • Chips and minor cracks on front teeth
  • Gaps between teeth, especially front teeth
  • Teeth that are slightly crooked or uneven
  • Worn-down edges from grinding or acid erosion
  • Teeth that are too small or oddly shaped
  • Uneven tooth lengths that create an irregular smile line

The advantage of veneers is that they handle all these issues simultaneously. Someone with stained, chipped teeth that are also slightly gapped doesn’t need three separate treatments—veneers address everything in one go.

How Veneers Differ from Crowns

Both veneers and crowns change how teeth look, but they work differently. Crowns cap the entire tooth and are primarily used to strengthen damaged or weakened teeth. Veneers only cover the front surface and are mainly cosmetic, though they do provide some protection to the underlying tooth.

Veneers require removing much less tooth structure than crowns do—usually less than a millimeter of enamel from just the front surface. Crowns involve shaping the entire tooth, removing structure from all sides. This makes veneers a more conservative option when the tooth itself is healthy and just needs cosmetic improvement.

However, veneers only work on front teeth that don’t handle heavy biting forces. Back molars need crowns if they require coverage because veneers aren’t strong enough for the pressure those teeth endure.

The Veneer Process Explained

Getting veneers typically takes two appointments. The first involves preparation and planning, while the second is placement of the final veneers.

At the initial visit, the dentist removes a thin layer of enamel from each tooth receiving a veneer. This creates room for the porcelain shell without making your teeth look bulky or feel too thick. The amount removed is minimal—about half a millimeter—but it’s permanent. Once enamel is removed, you’ll always need veneers or some other covering on those teeth.

Detailed impressions are taken of your prepared teeth along with photos and measurements. You’ll work with the dentist to choose the exact shade you want. Many people go a bit whiter than their natural teeth, but not so white that the veneers look obviously fake.

Temporary veneers made from acrylic are bonded to your teeth while the lab creates your permanent ones. These temporaries aren’t as strong as the finals, so you’ll need to be somewhat careful with what you eat for those couple weeks.

When the permanent veneers arrive, the temporaries come off and each veneer is tried in place. The dentist checks the fit, shape, and color before permanently bonding them. This is your chance to make sure you’re happy with how everything looks. Once they’re bonded, the shade can’t be changed.

The veneers are attached using a strong dental adhesive and a special light that hardens the bond. After placement, any final adjustments to your bite are made to ensure everything feels natural.

Choosing the Right Shade

Color choice matters more than people realize. Veneers that are too white look artificial and draw attention for the wrong reasons. Veneers that match your natural teeth exactly might miss an opportunity to brighten your smile.

Most people choose a shade that’s a few shades lighter than their natural teeth—noticeable but still natural-looking. Your dentist can show you shade guides and even create trial veneers so you can see how different colors look on your actual face before making a final decision.

Keep in mind that veneers don’t stain as natural teeth do. If you’re only getting veneers on your front teeth and leaving the rest natural, you want them to match closely enough that the difference isn’t obvious when you smile widely.

Living with Veneers

Veneers aren’t indestructible. Porcelain is strong but can crack or chip if subjected to enough force. Biting directly into hard foods like apples or crusty bread puts stress on the veneers. Tearing open packages with your teeth or biting your nails can damage them.

If you grind your teeth at night, you’ll need a nightguard to protect your veneers. Grinding wears down both natural teeth and veneers, and it can cause veneers to crack or pop off entirely.

Good oral hygiene keeps veneers looking their best. While the porcelain itself doesn’t stain, your gums can become inflamed if you don’t brush and floss properly, which affects how your smile looks overall. The edges where veneers meet your natural teeth can also collect plaque if not cleaned well.

Most veneers last ten to fifteen years before needing replacement. Some last even longer depending on how well they’re maintained and how much wear they experience.

Veneers Versus Other Cosmetic Options

For single teeth with minor issues, bonding might make more sense. It’s less expensive and doesn’t require removing enamel. However, bonding doesn’t last as long as veneers and is more prone to staining.

Whitening works great for surface stains, but can’t fix chips, gaps, or shape issues. Someone whose only concern is tooth color should try professional whitening first before considering veneers.

Orthodontics can straighten crooked teeth, but treatment takes months or years. Veneers provide immediate results for minor alignment issues, though they can’t fix serious bite problems or severely rotated teeth.

What Dental Veneers in Belgrade Cost

Veneers are an investment. Each tooth typically costs between a few hundred to over a thousand dollars, depending on the material and complexity. Most people get veneers on their front six or eight teeth—the ones visible when smiling—rather than their entire mouth.

Dental insurance rarely covers veneers since they’re considered cosmetic. Some offices offer financing plans that break the cost into monthly payments, making the treatment more accessible.

The longevity of veneers factors into their value. Something that lasts fifteen years costs less per year than treatments that need replacing every five years.

Making the Change

Dental veneers in Belgrade can dramatically change how you feel about your smile, but they’re a permanent modification to your teeth. Take time to think through whether you’re ready for that commitment and whether the results you’re hoping for are realistic. Schedule a consultation at Belgrade Family Dental to see examples of veneer work, discuss what’s possible for your specific situation, and decide if this treatment aligns with what you’re looking for.
