Cosmetic Dentistry

Your smile affects more than you might realize. It influences how you feel in photos, whether you hold back from laughing at a joke, and even how confident you feel walking into a job interview or on a first date. At Belgrade Family Dental, Dr. Jennifer Lehnhardt and our team offer cosmetic dentistry that addresses chips, stains, gaps, and other concerns that make people feel self-conscious about their teeth.

Cosmetic procedures focus on appearance, but many of them also improve function and protect your teeth from further damage. The results can completely change how you present yourself to the world.

Common Cosmetic Dental Treatments

Different problems call for different solutions. Someone with deep stains needs a different approach than someone with a chipped front tooth or uneven spacing.

Popular cosmetic options include:

  • Professional teeth whitening for stubborn stains
  • Porcelain veneers to reshape and brighten teeth
  • Dental bonding for chips and minor gaps
  • Gum contouring to fix a gummy smile
  • Tooth-colored fillings that blend naturally
  • Crown lengthening for better proportions

Each treatment targets specific concerns, and sometimes combining approaches gives the best results. A consultation helps determine which options make sense for what you want to change.

Teeth Whitening That Actually Works

Over-the-counter whitening strips work to a point, but they can’t match what professional treatment accomplishes. Professional-strength whitening gel penetrates deeper into the enamel to break up stains that have built up over years of coffee, tea, red wine, and simply aging.

In-office whitening produces dramatic results in a single visit. The dentist applies a concentrated gel and may use a special light to activate it, lifting stains several shades in about an hour. You walk out the same day with noticeably whiter teeth.

Take-home kits from your dentist use custom trays that fit your teeth exactly, which means better coverage and less gel waste than drugstore versions. The whitening process takes longer—usually a couple of weeks of wearing the trays for a specified time each day—but the results last longer and you can touch up whenever you need to.

Some stains don’t respond to whitening, particularly those caused by certain medications or tooth trauma. For those cases, veneers or bonding offer better solutions.

How Veneers Change Your Smile

Porcelain veneers are thin shells that cover the front surface of your teeth. They fix multiple issues at once: chips, cracks, deep stains, gaps, slightly crooked teeth, and worn enamel. The porcelain mimics natural tooth enamel so closely that most people can’t tell you’re wearing them.

Getting veneers usually requires two appointments. During the first visit, the dentist removes a thin layer of enamel from each tooth being treated—usually less than a millimeter. This makes room for the veneer without making your teeth look bulky. They take impressions and place temporary veneers while the lab creates your custom ones.

At the second appointment, the temporaries come off, and the permanent veneers are bonded into place. The dentist checks the fit and appearance carefully before finalizing everything, making sure your bite feels natural and the color matches what you wanted.

Veneers typically last ten to fifteen years with proper care. They resist staining better than natural teeth, which means your morning coffee won’t undo your results.

Dental Bonding for Quick Fixes

Bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin to repair chips, fill gaps, or reshape teeth. The dentist applies the resin directly to your tooth, sculpts it into the right shape, and hardens it with a special light. The whole process often takes less than an hour per tooth.

Bonding works great for minor cosmetic issues. It’s less expensive than veneers and doesn’t require removing any enamel in most cases. The downside is that bonding doesn’t last as long—usually five to seven years—and it’s more prone to staining than porcelain.

Many people choose bonding for a single chipped tooth or small gap, then consider veneers later if they want to address their whole smile. There’s no rule that says you have to do everything at once.

Fixing Gum Issues That Affect Appearance

Sometimes the problem isn’t really about your teeth at all. If your gums cover too much of your teeth, they can make your smile look gummy or your teeth appear short and stubby. Gum contouring reshapes the gum line to expose more of the tooth surface, creating better proportions.

The procedure uses a laser or surgical tools to carefully remove excess gum tissue. Most people experience minimal discomfort and heal quickly. Combined with whitening or veneers, gum contouring can dramatically transform how your smile looks.

Uneven gums—where the gum line sits at different heights on different teeth—also benefit from contouring. Evening everything out creates a more balanced, symmetrical appearance.

Replacing Old Silver Fillings

Those dark metal fillings from years ago don’t just look obvious when you laugh or yawn—they can also weaken over time and allow bacteria to seep underneath. Replacing them with tooth-colored composite fillings improves both appearance and protection.

Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth structure, which actually strengthens the tooth rather than just filling a hole. They’re also more conservative, requiring less removal of healthy tooth structure than traditional amalgam fillings did.

Understanding Cosmetic Dentistry in Belgrade Costs and Expectations

Cosmetic treatments range widely in price depending on what you’re having done. Bonding costs less than veneers, and whitening is more affordable than either. During your consultation, you’ll get specific pricing based on your goals.

Most cosmetic procedures aren’t covered by dental insurance since they’re considered elective. However, some treatments that improve both function and appearance—like replacing a broken tooth with a crown—may have partial coverage.

Results aren’t instant for every procedure. Whitening shows immediate changes, but veneers require multiple appointments. Setting realistic expectations from the start helps you plan accordingly.

Getting Started

If something about your smile bothers you enough that you think about it regularly, cosmetic dentistry can probably help. Schedule a consultation at Belgrade Family Dental to discuss what you’d like to change. Bring photos if you’ve seen smiles you admire—it helps communicate what you’re hoping to achieve. The conversation starts with what matters to you, and the treatment plan builds from there.
